Go Direct May 1, 2011 Deadline

Go Direct
The U.S. Department of the Treasury now requires all new recipients of federal benefit and non-tax payments to be paid electronically.
People applying for Social Security, Veterans benefits or other federal benefits on or after May 1, 2011, will receive their payments electronically starting with their first payment.
By March 1, 2013 all those currently receiving federal benefit checks will need to switch to an electronic payment option – direct deposit to a bank or credit union account or to the Direct Express¨ Debit MasterCard¨ card.
Direct Deposit is easier, safer and more convenient than mailing checks.  Today, about 83 percent of federal benefit payments are made by direct deposit.  It’s easier because the payment goes straight into the account on payment day each month, giving people more control over their money. Direct deposit is safer as it eliminates the risk of stolen checks and forged signatures, and helps protect people from identity theft.
It’s easy to change to direct deposit, and it only takes a few minutes.  There are several options:
* Call the “Go Direct” Customer Service at (800) 333-1795
* Enroll online www.GoDirect.gov
* Enroll by mail by printing, completing, and
  mailing the necessary forms FMS Form 1200 available online
  www.GoDirect.gov
* Enroll at a bank, credit union, or local Social Security office

WEATHERIZATION CAN HELP FAMILIES LOWER THEIR BILLS

As the current economic downturn continues to affect low-income Americans, they can expect high prices in home heating bills this winter making it even tougher. However, there is something that they can do now to help lower these bills. Weatherization provides a cost-effective permanent solution for reducing the heavy energy burden on low-income Americans and runs all year round.

The Weatherization Program is also a priority of the federal economic stimulus plan to help make low-income households more energy efficient so there is additional funding available.
